Katherine Ognyanova

Katherine received her Ph.D. from the University of Southern California, Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism. She holds a B.Sc. degree in Computer Science, and M.A. degrees in Communication and Virtual Culture. Katya does research with a broad focus on transformations of the media system, political and civic engagement, and the impact of technology on social structures. Her doctoral thesis investigates the changing patterns of news production and consumption in a digital age through actor-based network models. At USC, Katherine studied the role online tools play in social organization, public participation, and scientific work. As a member of the Annenberg Networks Network (ANN), she did research on content production and collaboration in virtual communities. Katya was also part of the Metamorphosis group and its local initiative aimed at evaluating the impact of new media on civic engagement in diverse populations. Pursuing a similar line of research, she worked at the Center for the Digital Future, conducting data analysis for the World Internet Project.
In addition to her Annenberg graduate fellowship, Katya completed a fellowship at the FCC with the Consortium on Media Policy Studies, as well as the Oxford Internet Institute Summer Doctoral Program.
